Alf Vaernéus, a project manager at the SSC, has embraced a worthy cause. In collaboration with researchers from Uppsala University, he is working to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. As part of the rocket program, pancreatic stem cells were transported into space and the cells and their activation studied under microgravity. The results have yet to be published.
